Ecosystem Condition: Nature Disclosure's Missing Metric

TNFD, the CSRD's ESRS E4 and GRI all require you to disclose ecosystem condition, then leave the metric undefined. Here is how a satellite-derived condition score fills that gap across the nature-disclosure frameworks, for every parcel and every year since 2018.

Nature reporting has grown up fast. In two years it has gone from a voluntary nicety to something written into European law and global accounting standards. The Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures set the template. The EU’s CSRD made ecosystem reporting a legal duty through its ESRS E4 standard. The Global Reporting Initiative published GRI 101, its first dedicated biodiversity standard, in force since the start of 2026.

All of them ask for the same thing in slightly different words: report the condition of the ecosystems your business affects and depends on. And all of them stop at the same place. They tell you to measure ecosystem condition. None tells you how.

A box on the form, and nothing to put in it

TNFD is open about the problem. It lists ecosystem condition as a core indicator of the state of nature, then says plainly that no single metric can capture every dimension of it. ESRS E4 and GRI 101 inherit the same silence. The standard names the thing to disclose, the box sits there on the page, and the question of what number goes in it is handed back to you.

That is not a small omission, because condition is the part that matters most. Extent tells you how much habitat you have. Condition tells you whether it works. Leave it out and a nature disclosure is an inventory with no health check: a record of where your land is and how much of it there is, silent on whether any of it is functioning.

The number we put in the box

EcoIntel measures the missing thing directly. It is a satellite read of ecosystem condition, of whether land is functioning, for every parcel of a property, every year, going back to 2018, anywhere, with nobody on site.

The number is the Land Health Score: one to nine, ascending from collapsed to flourishing, set against the healthy reference state for the land’s own ecoregion, and built from four ecosystem processes, the Water Cycle, Energy Flow, Mineral Cycle and Community Dynamics (the WCI, EFI, MCI and CDI indices, each scored 0 to 100). A high score means the land behaves like a working example of its own kind of habitat. Because the benchmark is local, a Welsh wet grassland is judged against other Welsh wet grasslands, not against a Mediterranean hillside.

Our public demonstration site, Wilder Wood Farm, shows the shape of it. From satellite alone, with no visit, it reads as 175 hectares across 44 fields, sitting mid-scale at a Land Health Score of 5, Transitional, holding broadly steady over eight years, with Community Dynamics the weakest of its four processes. The eight-year history counts for as much as the snapshot, and nobody had to walk the ground to collect it.

One assessment, many frameworks

A single condition score is worth so much because the frameworks overlap far more than their separate names suggest, with TNFD as the connective tissue between them. As of 2026, every one of TNFD’s fourteen recommended disclosures is reflected in the ESRS, and almost all of them map onto GRI as well. The ISSB, whose IFRS standards are the global baseline for sustainability reporting, has confirmed it is building its nature guidance on TNFD, with practice guidance to sit alongside its existing standards expected in draft later in the year.

For a reporting team, that interoperability is the whole point. One condition assessment, done once, drops into the condition and extent cells of TNFD, ESRS E4, GRI and the Science Based Targets Network at the same time. The carbon layer feeds the climate standards. Geolocation and an eight-year deforestation-free record cover the EU Deforestation Regulation. You assess the land once and answer many askers from the same evidence.

A word on what this is and is not. EcoIntel gives you the evidence base and the structure, and it supports reporting aligned to TNFD, the ISSB, CSRD and GRI. What good condition evidence looks like

A buyer’s procurement team, or an auditor, is not won over by a score on its own. What they look for, and what ESRS E4 and TNFD effectively reward, has a few properties, and condition data is built to carry them.

It is measured from outside the business rather than self-declared, so it holds weight a self-assessment never can. It comes with a dated baseline and a direction of travel, not a single flattering snapshot. It is structured to line up with the frameworks, so one record answers TNFD, E4 and GRI together instead of being reworked for each. And it is continuous and cheap to maintain, refreshed every year without a field campaign. Evidence that holds those four properties is the difference between a number an auditor accepts and one they send back.

Why the honest boundary is the advantage

There is a pull, in this market, to cover the gaps with a confident green badge. We built the opposite, and it is the most valuable thing we own.

The product shows its own limits. It does not identify species, so the species line on any disclosure stays empty and labelled for what it needs, an eDNA sample or a field survey. A change in condition too small to clear the measurement error is reported as a direction of travel, not a verdict. Anything you assert yourself, a policy or a target, is logged as your representation and never recoloured into something the satellite proved. Gains and losses sit side by side rather than being netted into one favourable figure. There is no pass mark and no nature-positive stamp, because no remote instrument can honestly hand those out.

This is what the frameworks actually reward. Both TNFD and ESRS treat an honest “material, not yet measured, and here is the plan” as a legitimate answer. A tool that marks its own boundary is the one that survives the people paid to find the overstatement: the assurance partner, the watchdog, the procurement team working through your evidence line by line. In nature reporting, credibility is the scarce commodity, and the boundary is where you earn it.

Two ends of one supply chain

One last thing the condition layer settles: who pays, and why the price splits the way it does.

The obligation and the data sit at opposite ends of the same chain. The duty is up-chain, with the corporate buyer who carries the mandatory reporting, under CSRD, the ISSB and supply-chain disclosure, along with the legal exposure attached to it. That buyer needs aggregation across many suppliers, an audit-ready crosswalk from one assessment to many frameworks, and the machinery of assurance-readiness. That is the premium, lower-volume end.

The data is down-chain, on the farm, whose own reporting is still voluntary but whose buyer is asking for it more insistently every season. For the farm the value is ease: make it cheap and quick to hand over the credential the chain wants, alongside an agronomic read worth having regardless. That is the high-volume end.

So the dividing line is not carbon against nature, and it is not who can pay. It is who carries the obligation, and at what scale. The same evidence sits beneath every site. What changes is the packaging and the assurance wrapped around it.

Nature disclosure has assembled itself at remarkable speed. The piece still missing, in 2026, is an agreed and affordable way to answer its own central question: is this ecosystem in good condition, and which way is it heading? TNFD names ecosystem condition as a core state-of-nature indicator but deliberately does not define a single metric for it, stating that no one metric captures every dimension. Can a single assessment cover several nature frameworks at once?
