Nature-condition metric

A defensible number for the condition, the functional quality, of an ecosystem, scored against a reference and tracked over time. It is the figure the nature-disclosure frameworks ask preparers to report for the state of nature and decline to define.

A nature-condition metric is a number that expresses the condition of an ecosystem: not how much habitat there is, but whether that habitat is functioning, scored against a reference for its type and tracked through time. It is what TNFD calls the level of ecosystem condition by type of ecosystem, what ESRS E4-5 means by the condition of ecosystems, and what GRI 101 and the Science Based Targets Network ask for as part of the state of nature.

The defining feature of this corner of the market is that the frameworks require the metric and do not specify it. TNFD states plainly that it “does not currently specify one metric as there is no single metric that will capture all relevant dimensions of changes to the state of nature and a consensus is still developing”. The box is named on the form; the number to put in it is handed back to the preparer.

A credible nature-condition metric has a few properties. It is referenced (scored against the expected state for the ecosystem type, not on an absolute scale), it is a change metric (it carries a dated baseline and a direction of travel, because disclosure is about trajectory), and it is independent and repeatable (measured from outside the business, the same way each year).
