What Is Land Health, and How Do You Measure It?
Land health is how well a landscape's natural systems are working. Learn what it means, why it is rarely measured, and how EcoIntel measures it from space.
Land health is a measure of how well the natural systems of a landscape are working: how it captures water, converts sunlight into living matter, cycles nutrients, and supports the relationships between living things. Healthy land does these things well. Degraded land does not. For most of history we have had no practical way to measure it. That has now changed.
This article explains what land health is, why it has been so hard to measure, and how satellite data and ecological science now make it possible to assess the health of any piece of land quickly and affordably.
What is land health?
Land health is the condition of a landscape understood as a living system, not as a single property. It is not the same as soil fertility, carbon content or species count, though it includes all of these. It is a measure of whether the underlying processes that keep land productive and resilient are functioning well.
A useful way to think about it is to ask three questions of any field, farm, estate or nature reserve. How healthy is this land? Why is it the way it is? And what should be done next? These questions sound obvious, yet they are rarely at the centre of how land is actually managed, because, until recently, answering them well was out of reach for almost everyone.
Why is land health so rarely measured?
Not for lack of science. The word ecology was coined by Ernst Haeckel in 1866. The first systematic ecological measurement system, the Saprobien system, was developed in Germany in 1908 and 1909. Ecosystem health crystallised as an interdisciplinary field in the 1990s. The understanding has existed for a long time.
The barrier has been practical. A proper land health assessment has traditionally required a trained field ecologist to walk the land and produce a detailed report. For a single medium-sized farm that can mean a week of expert time. There are nowhere near enough trained ecologists to cover even a fraction of the world’s farmed and managed land, and the cost puts a comprehensive assessment beyond reach for most landowners. So in practice it simply does not get done.
What is the difference between a snapshot and a flow?
This is the heart of the problem, and the reason most existing measurements fall short. A soil test, a carbon measurement and a biodiversity count are all snapshots. They tell you the state of one thing at one moment. They are fragments of a larger whole.
What determines whether land is healthy is not any single snapshot but the flows running through it, the ongoing processes that keep the system alive. It is a bit like knowing how many metres a football team passed the ball in one match. Interesting, but did they win? How are they doing across the season? To manage land well, you need to understand the flows, not just the snapshots.
What are the processes that determine land health?
Land health comes down to four ecosystem flows working together:
- The water cycle: whether rainfall is absorbed and held, or lost to runoff.
- Energy flow: how effectively sunlight is being converted into living matter by plants.
- The mineral cycle: whether nutrients are retained and cycled within the system, or leaking out of it.
- Community dynamics: how diverse and well-connected the relationships between living things are.

How does EcoIntel measure land health?
EcoIntel measures land health by combining ecological science with artificial intelligence applied to satellite data. Rather than sampling a few representative points, the system assesses every 10-metre by 10-metre block of land, and can look back to 2018 to see how each piece has changed over time.
That historical depth matters. It lets the system distinguish the effect of good management from the effect of a good weather year, and show what is happening season by season rather than at a single moment. The result is a continuously updated, whole-system view of how the land is functioning, the kind of view that previously required a field ecologist on site, now available within hours of uploading farm and field data.
What does a Land Health Score tell you?
The Land Health System scores land on a nine-level Land Health Score, from 1 (Collapsed) to 9 (Flourishing). We think of it as a Beaufort scale for land health, a simple, readable measure of a complex reality, much as the Beaufort wind scale turned a complex phenomenon into something anyone could read.
Crucially, every piece of land is measured against what is possible in its own eco-region. A hill farm is judged against what that land could be, not against a lowland arable field. The score is reported field by field, woodland by woodland, season by season and year by year, alongside a diagnosis of why the land is performing as it is and guidance on what to do next.
Who needs to measure land health?
Anyone whose decisions depend on the condition of land. Farmers and land managers, to guide management for productivity, carbon and other ecosystem services. Estate managers and land investors, to establish a baseline and track change. Banks and funds, to understand the long-term condition of rural assets. And companies with land in their supply chains, who increasingly need this data to meet disclosure requirements under frameworks such as TNFD and the EU’s ESRS.
Land health is measurable. What is measurable can be managed. What is managed can be improved and demonstrated. That is the chain of logic that makes measuring land health worth doing, and what EcoIntel exists to make possible.
